My clients work in the arts and media and love their home to reflect their tastes and to be a place to enjoy items they have collected and curated over the years.
They are big on entertaining and want it to be practical to cook in and exciting to spend time in!
Design brief
It was a pleasure to work with clients who had a strong appreciation of the aesthetic along with a clear idea of how they wanted to use their space and what message they wanted it to convey. My brief was to develop a space that was sufficiently neutral so as not to detract from their collectables, to include some storage for books and wines and to provide a space that was functional with a hidden area for laundry without creating a specific utility room. The space also had to be sympathetic to some key items of furniture and include natural wood elements to compliment these pieces .
Statement of intent
I suggested using a warm neutral soft touch lacquered door with a wood veneer in a warm earthy tone with distinctive grain and texture from Rotpunkt, which allowed for the customisation of units and offered a specific laundry cupboard in the same door finish which could blend in with the tall units. I suggested using wood on the island and wall units to create a link a seamless link between the living and dinning area and the kitchen, I also suggested an area at the end of the kitchen for the laundry and for utility storage to give the space a sense of zoning and to prevent the more mundane but essential chore encroaching upon the main space.
We agreed on a downdraft hob with recirculation to allow them to cook and remain connected to those gathered around the table and to prevent the need for overhead extraction which might unbalance the overall look of the space.
